     Sunday announcements

     July 12 • 2020
     15th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Elder of the month: Greg McNair

    Five practices of fruitful congregations

    Passionate worship

    ■ Due to COVID-19, we will not have in-person worship on Sunday, July 12. Join us for our online worship at, on the Swift Presbyterian Church Facebook page and on YouTube.

     — 10 a.m. and later —
    Worship service online only

    ‘Dissension in the Desert’

    Exodus 17:1–7
    — The Rev. Keith Cardwell
Fourth in the ‘Road Trip’ series

    ■ Acolytes: Cadi Cardwell, McCoy Cooper

    ■ Seeking worship helpers: If you would like to light and extinguish the candles as an acolyte, lead the “time with the children,” or read Scripture as part of our online Sunday worship, please contact the church office for more information.

    ►Wednesday evening worship

Wednesday evening worship outdoors was canceled for July 8. It is scheduled again for July 22. We will wait to see about the upswing in COVID-19 cases to determine if we will again have to cancel our evening worship service.

    ►Handbell rehearsals canceled

Wednesday night rehearsals for the handbell choir resumed recently but have ceased. COVID-19 has come to the nursing home and rehab facility where director Lisa Cardwell works. Lisa has had no close contact with staff and residents who have symptoms of infection. She’s just being extra careful for the safety of the Swift family.

    Radical hospitality

Although we aren’t practicing radical hospitality by welcoming neighbors or strangers into our houses of worship — the sanctuary and chapel — let us take this time to welcome God in, receive God’s love and make room for God in our lives. Let us pray that we will soon be together again, focusing on receiving God’s love and sharing it with others.

    Intentional faith development
    ►‘Snacks with Susan and Daryl’
    Sunday school class

We will be having class on July 12. Please take a look at Ephesians, Chapter 4, for our discussion.

In our previous discussion, we talked about why people have to be right … it was pretty thought-provoking and seems to be part of the “we want to control everything” that we flawed humans seem to want. We also went back to the idea that everything a person thinks, says, or believes make perfect sense to them and it’s sometimes hard for them to believe that you don’t see it that way.

    — Susan and Daryl Pichoff

    ►Adult Sunday school class,
    led by Cheryl

Cheryl’s class will not meet on July 12. Someone visiting Cheryl’s home came down with COVID-19, so she is quarantining herself for the next two weeks as a precautionary measure.

    Small-group meetings

Small groups of 12 or fewer may meet at the church using social distancing and other safe practices. For now, worship will continue to be online only. If you wish to start a small group of worship or study, please contact the church so that available accommodations can be made.

    ►Online ‘Zoom’ Bible study

It’s open to all members and friends

The Thursday morning Bible study “meets” as an online study, through a tool called Zoom. It can be accessed on a computer or smart phone from 10 to 10:40. We also send out a weekly email to help keep us connected.

Materials are your Bible and a study book, Knowing the Bible: Exodus. We are going through Exodus chapter by chapter; an appropriate book to study in these days of what may feel like exile to many of us.

For more information, contact Pastor Jody Beth, 251-213-6625.

    ►Copies of ‘Our Daily Bread’

The June–August “Our Daily Bread” devotional booklets are in the church office. Please come by and pick one up or let us know and we will deliver one to you.

    Risk-taking mission and service
    ►Food pantry update

The food pantry is open on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month.

Nineteen bags of food (to help feed 40 people) and three masks were given out on July 8.

Our next scheduled distribution is July 22 from 10 to 11 a.m. Please note the change in time

    ►Swift financial help

If you are in financial need because of COVID-19 — lack of work, medical bills, no stimulus check, or other reasons — please contact Pastors Keith or Jody Beth for a confidential conversation about how Swift Church can help you financially.

    ►Warning on email, text messages

Please be aware that if you receive an e-mail from Pastor Keith and there are two “t”s in the spelling of Swift Church such as “,” it is a fraud and should not be opened. Also, if you receive a text that seems suspicious, please contact Pastor Keith before responding.

    Extravagant generosity
    ►Tithes and offerings

“I give you my hands, my heart, my hope, Lord.
Use the change in me to change others for you.
May your life be seen in mine.”

Although we are not meeting in person, please remember to mail or drop off your tithes and offerings during this time of separation. You may also give online at Living Waters for the World is our mission emphasis for the next few weeks. If you wish an additional part of your offering to go toward this mission, please select missions on the online dropdown menu, or designate missions on your tithing check. You may also send a separate check.

    ►Please let us know . . .

During this time of online worship, please know that you can call the church or email to notify us of any joys or concerns; birthdays, anniversaries, health issues or family deaths so that we may put it in the weekly emailed announcements for your church family to pray with you or to praise God for your joy.
