What is Cursillo?

Cursillo is Spanish for "short course." It is a three day retreat designed for Presbyterians who desire to renew their faith and to develop a deeper understanding of their relationship with Christ. The laity-led retreat is organized around a series of talks given by lay people and clergy who serve as staff. Along with these talks there are opportunities to worship, fellowship, sing, and enjoy uplifting music, celebrate the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper, and participate in group discussions.

The first day focuses on liberation. The concept of liberation means being set free to live a new kind of life in Christ. Talks center around unmasking both moral and psychological obstacles to living a life of grace.

Day two focuses on Christ. Talks seek to lead participants to experience the "coming of life" of the truth of Christianity, which is Christ.

The third day focuses on the Christian Life. The last day of the retreat focuses not on a methodology for living but on a backbone for life. Talks seek to give shape, strength, and resiliency to Christians, who are then challenged to shape their worlds in the image of the Kingdom of Christ.

Just like other programs, Cursillo is a tool to assist participants in spiritual renewal. It is not designed to provide a conversion experience, but is directed at committed Christians who earnestly desire to grow in Christ. It is neither the beginning nor the end of one's faith journey.

When and where is Cursillo?

There are two Cursillo retreats held every year here in Alabama. One in the fall and one in the spring. Applications are available for the APC #24 Spring Retreat held April 8th through 11th. Our own Emily McMahan is the moderator. Make plans to go if you haven't experienced this venture.

All Cursillo retreats are held at Beckwith Retreat and Conference Center in Baldwin County, Alabama, just southeast of Fairhope.
